• Children under the age of ten (10) years must be supervised by a parent/guardian/caregiver who is at least fourteen (14) years of age.
• Children between the ages of ten (10) years and seventeen (17) years may be unsupervised but must be able to provide contact information for a parent/guardian/caregiver to be used in case of an emergency. All children must abide by library rules of conduct and may be asked to leave if they are being disruptive or destructive.
• While every effort is made to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone, the library staff members are not guardians or care givers to unaccompanied minors and cannot assume responsibility for the safety of the children in the library.
• The library staff members cannot prevent minors from leaving the library.
• Staff members are prohibited from providing transportation to minors.
• Under Pennsylvania State Code § 42.42, the library staff members are recognized as Mandated Reporters. If a staff member has reasonable cause to suspect that a child is being abused, he/she will notify the proper authorities.
• In the event of an unexpected library closure, every attempt will be made to reach the child’s parent or guardian. If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, the library staff will contact the Jeannette Police Department, who will assume custody of the child until the parent or guardian can be reached. Two staff members will stay with the child until the police arrive.
• Shortly before regular library closing time, minors will be reminded that the library is closing and that they will need to arrange for transportation home if needed.
