Library Closure Policy

To fulfill its mission of public service, the Jeannette Public Library will make every responsible effort to open to the public as scheduled, consistent with safe access for patrons and staff members.

The library will close, delay opening or close ahead of schedule when the weather becomes hazardous to the health and/or safety of the public and/or library staff. Circumstances which could precipitate closure include, but are not limited to:

Failure of heating/cooling equipment during periods of extreme weather
Heavy snowfall
Unsafe road conditions
Power outages
Outage of circulation desk computers for an extended period
Any situation that creates an unsafe environment

The decision to close, postpone opening or close early will be made by the Library Director. The Library Director will then contact the Board President to alert them of any closures. If the Library Director is not available, staff are to contact the Board President for a decision regarding closures.

After the decision is made to close, the director or other staff will contact the following:

WTAE (Channel 4)
KDKA (Channel 2)
WPXI (Channel 11)
System/District Office
Any prescheduled speakers, presenters, or guests
Staff members scheduled to work (no staff members are permitted to enter the library during closures unless given permission by the library director.)

The public will be notified of the Library Closure Policy through postings on the library website and social media pages.
